The Elevated Wrap

Eight inexpensive supplies that make every present under the tree look like it came from a boutique, and three easy ways to combine them.

The gift matters most, but the wrapping is the first thing anyone sees. A beautifully wrapped box tells the person you took your time. The good news is that it doesn't take a stationery-store budget or a design degree. It takes a plan and a handful of materials that work together.

I wrap the same way every year: a good paper, something to tie it, a layer of texture, and one finishing piece. Once you think in those four layers, every gift comes together in a few minutes.

Reversible plaid and tree wrapping paper

4 rolls30 in × 10 ft eachreversible

This set from RUSPEPA covers the classic Christmas palette: a red and green plaid, solid red, solid green, and a sweet tree and bear print. Every sheet is printed on both sides, so one roll gives you two looks. The 30-inch width also handles boot boxes and bigger gifts without piecing.

Try this: wrap in the plaid side, then cut a band from the solid green and wrap it around the middle as a "belly band" before you tie it.

Green and beige striped kraft paper

If you want a quieter, more grown-up look, this is your paper. The muted green stripe on a beige kraft base looks expensive and pairs with every other item on this list. The mini rolls are 17 inches wide, which is the perfect size for books, candles, jewellery boxes and stocking stuffers, with far less waste.

Try this: run the stripes vertically on tall boxes and horizontally on flat ones. It makes each gift look deliberately styled.

Burgundy vintage print wrapping sheets

12 sheets20 × 29 inmatte · folded flat

This FunooFuno set gives you six vintage-style burgundy designs (snowflakes, trees, plaid, bows, ornaments and script), two sheets of each. The paper is a thick 105gsm with a matte finish, so it creases crisply and doesn't tear at the corners. It comes folded flat instead of on a roll, which makes it easy to store in a drawer.

Try this: these were made for the burgundy velvet bows below. Mix two or three of the prints across a stack of gifts for one family so they look like a set.

Vintage newspaper kraft paper

Every pile of presents needs one playful paper. This RUSPEPA kraft roll is printed like an old newspaper, with headlines such as "Christmas is coming!" alongside Santa's sleigh, trees and snowflakes. It's a natural fit for Secret Santa, white elephant swaps and the friends who love a little nostalgia.

Try this: keep the trim simple so the print does the talking. A few wraps of jute twine and one berry pick are all it needs.

Natural jute twine

600 ft2 mmbrown jute

Jute twine is the most useful thing in my wrapping basket. It adds a handmade, rustic texture and costs very little per gift. This PerkHomy spool holds 600 feet, which is enough for every present this year and next, plus tags, garlands and kitchen use.

Try this: wrap the twine around the box three or four times in the same direction instead of once in a cross. It looks deliberate and holds a sprig of greenery in place.

Brown, nude and ivory velvet ribbon

5/8 in25 yd3 colours

Velvet is the quickest way to make a gift feel luxurious. This Vitalizart set comes in brown, nude and ivory, a neutral trio that softens bold papers and warms up kraft. At 5/8 inch it is thin enough to layer with twine and still ties a neat, soft bow.

Try this: layer one velvet ribbon over a strand of jute. The contrast between soft and rough textures is what makes a wrap look professional.

Pine and red berry floral picks

40 picksbendable stemsartificial

A sprig of greenery tucked under the ribbon turns a nicely wrapped gift into a beautiful one. These Norme picks pair pine needles with red berries, and the stems bend, so you can shape them around a knot or curl them over the edge of a box. Forty pieces is enough to dress every gift plus your wreath or table setting.

Try this: slide two picks under the knot facing opposite directions, then tie your bow on top to hide the stems.

Burgundy velvet bows

12 pack5 × 10 inpre-tied

For the gifts that deserve a moment, use these oversized burgundy velvet bows from Laecton. They arrive pre-tied, so there's no fiddling, and the deep wine colour reads more sophisticated than bright red. They are big enough to clip onto a wreath or a chair back for Christmas dinner too.

Try this: save these for the top of the tree: the one standout gift per person, or the presents you're handing over in person.

Set up a wrapping station

Keep everything in one basket: papers standing upright, twine and ribbon on a dowel or paper towel holder, picks and bows in a shoebox, plus sharp scissors and double-sided tape. When it's all in one place, wrapping becomes a cosy evening with a movie on instead of a stressful job on Christmas Eve.

Happy wrapping, and if you try one of these combinations, I'd love to see it.
